An Interview with Jill Terry - Prospects College co-ordinator

Q Tell us more about the Future Builder project

The project started in 2005 and was aimed at Year 10 pupils wanting to gain a practical knowledge of the construction industry by attending Prospects College for two days a week. In the 1st year they work towards a Level 1 BTEC Certificate in Construction, they select which discipline they want to follow from Carpentry and Joinery, Bricklaying or Painting and Decorating. It involves lots of theory as well as practical work, Health and Safety and also includes topics such as financial responsibilities. In the 2nd year they can choose a second practical discipline and progress on to the BTEC Diploma, some pupils are also following the City & Guilds 6217, a basic practical course in construction.

Q How many pupils are on the project and which schools are they from?

We currently have 22 pupils (2 of which are female) working towards the BTEC Diploma. Pupils attend from Chase High, Thorpe Bay, Belfairs, Cecil Jones and Shoeburyness.
