Doug Nichols
Having achieved an Honours Degree in Chemistry from Manchester University, Doug decided that people were more interesting than test tubes and that he wanted to teach. He completed his PGCE at the Institute of Education in London, before accepting his first post in Upminster. He remained at the school for twelve years, moving to the position of Senior Teacher, Head of Sixth Form. The limited experience offered by a high performing school in Upminster caused him to move to Romford, where life was somewhat more challenging. After only four terms in Romford he made an application to Cecil Jones and was appointed as Deputy Head, in charge of the Lower School. After four years he became First Deputy, moving to the Upper School and, upon the retirement of the Headteacher, was promoted to Headteacher in 2005.
He believes that there is more to education than exam results and feels that the current emphasis on statistics and targets fails to recognise the importance of encouraging young people to develop in to good human beings. The most important resource in education is people and recruiting the right people, supporting their development and recognising their achievements is the key to sustained success. He would wish to see education valued more as the means to creating a better society in the broadest possible sense.
